OUR NATURE

Spiny Tree

This tree lives up to its name, with its trunk and branches full of thorns. Even the fruits the tree produces, usually in August, are prickly. Around July, this tree produces flowers that are white in color. The leaves are 'palmate' with five to seven 'fingers'. They have large leaves, which can have a diameter of up to 30 centimeters.

Sensitive to its environment

The spiny tree has fairly superficial roots and therefore cannot withstand drought well. The tree sheds its leaves in winter, but out of self-protection this also happens during long periods of drought or heat. The leaf first turns yellow or red before falling off.

The species is therefore under the influence of environmental factors, which is also reflected in its growth. The spiny tree in the Netherlands usually grows to a height of 8 to 9 metres, with peaks of 15 meters high. In the countries of origin, the spiny tree can reach heights of up to 30 meters. The tree almost stops growing once it has reached an age of about 40 years.

Avifauna is committed

…to conserve vulnerable or endangered species. With our special bird collection and the expertise of our employees, we contribute to the preservation of biodiversity, both in the park and in the region.

NATURE EXPERIENCE

Avifauna has traditionally always invested a lot in the planting of the park, but its character has changed. Where the green used to be mostly had the function of an ornamental garden, we now give more space to nature. A visit to the park becomes real nature experience. That approach is relatively new to Avifauna, but fully fits in with our mission to protect nature and promote biodiversity. WThey are determined not to sit helplessly on the sidelines as nature impoverishes or even disappears. Will you help us with that?
