Vulture Valley 'Umvikeli'

The Vulture Valley has been given the Zulu name Umvikeli, which means 'protector'. This impressive aviary of over 2000 m² provides a home to the seriously endangered group of Rüppell's vultures, taken in by Avifauna. The vultures live here together with white-headed vultures, hooded vultures and Egyptian vultures. Many other special African birds such as hoopoes, secretary birds and tricoloured glossy starlings also inhabit the area.

Vulture Valley Umvikeli

Rüppell’s vultures are critically endangered and play a vital role in the ecosystem by clearing carcasses, which helps prevent disease. From the viewing point, the African lodge, visitors are literally in the middle of the aviary. Here, visitors learn more about our five ideal goals: Bird Rescue, Research, Biodiversity, Nature Conservation and Education.
Some fun facts about the residents:
Rüppell's vulture: Highest flying bird (up to 11 km), lives 40-50 years. Cools down by pooping on legs. Hooded vulture: Dark brown plumage, bald pink head. Adaptable, sometimes on rubbish dumps. White-headed vulture: Nests in tall trees, hunts live prey. Hover for hours without moving wings. Vulture: Slender, lighter colored. Sometimes eat dung for extra carotene, revered in ancient Egypt. Secretary bird: Hunts from the ground, expert at killing snakes. Black feathers on the back of the head resemble goose feathers.
