Of the 20 nests our flamingos have, the first chick has just been born! After a week, the chicks leave their nest and you will see them all standing together. Flamingos recognize each other by the sound they make.
Here are some more fun facts about flamingos:
Pink color: Flamingos get their pink color from the food they eat, such as algae and crustaceans, which are rich in carotenoids. Without this food, they would be gray or white.
Standing on One Leg: Flamingos often stand on one leg to conserve energy and regulate their body temperature. This helps them stay warm in cold water.
Social Birds: Flamingos are very social animals and live in large flocks that can sometimes number thousands of birds. This helps them find food and provides protection from predators.
Flying skills: Flamingos can fly long distances and reach speeds of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour. They fly with their necks and legs outstretched.
Nest building: Flamingos build their nests out of mud in the shape of a volcano to prevent them from being submerged. This protects their eggs from flooding.
Longevity: Flamingos can live between 20 and 30 years in the wild. In captivity, they can even live up to 40 years due to the absence of predators.
