Vogelpark Avifauna Welcomes a wonderful new family member: a vicuña calf! This young animal is already happily frolicking among the herd, bringing new life to the Argentine Cerrado. It's a true autumn calf, born at this time of year, and a special addition to our animal family.
Vicuñas are graceful animals from the Andes and the national symbol of Peru. They are best known for their extremely soft wool, which is among the finest in the world, and their continuously growing teeth. In their natural habitat, vicuñas live in small family groups, and Avifauna also observes mothers caring for their young with great care.
For the first few weeks, the young stays close to its mother, who protects it from other group members and danger. They encourage the young to run, play, and carefully explore its surroundings, so it quickly becomes strong and independent. The rest of the group is curious but respectful; the family bonds are strong and ensure the young feels safe.
Our vicuñas live alongside rheas, crested coots and even the impressive giant anteater, creating a vibrant and diverse habitat.
Come and admire this new autumn chick up close – a wonderful example of the caring and social behavior of vicuñas!
