In our park 3 ribbed hornbills have hatched. Very special, because this is an endangered species. Worldwide, 22 zoos are participating in the conservation program for this beautiful bird, but only Avifauna has had young born this year. In 2008, Avifauna had young of this hornbill species for the last time.
The parents are a close-knit team during reproduction. The female bricks herself in a hollow tree to protect the eggs and young. Through a crack, the male can feed her and the young. An important task, because the female can be stuck in this for about 3 months. As soon as the youngsters have grown their plumage they come out of the nest together with their mother.
