OUR NATURE

lantern

Contrary to what the name suggests, the lantern is not a luminous lady. This damselfly has a black abdomen, except for the second to last segment, which is colored bright blue. This looks a bit like a lantern on a stick, hence the name.

At home in freshwater

The lantern is the most common damselfly in Vogelpark Avifauna. This well recognizable species feels at home in freshwater and can therefore often be found around ponds.

Males and females look different. The male has a green and blue colored thorax. In the female, the color of this thorax varies, from brown and orange to purple, blue or green. In some females, the colors fade into each other as they age.

The larva is small and has short pointed appendages on the abdomen. The development of the larva takes about a year. The 'emergence' - the process by which the larva crawls out of the cocoon - lasts from the end of April to September. Most damselflies can be found between the end of May and the end of August.

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE LANTERN IS ONLY A FEW DAYS OLD?

Lanterns live much longer have an updated larval stage then as a maid. They take about a year to out the cocoon to sneak, maar then life as a damsel is short. Mannettes living usually only five day, en although females if they can stretch it to eleven days, they will not live long either.
