OUR NATURE

Japanese nut tree

The Japanese nut tree has a rich history and an equally special growth and flowering method. The tree is revered in Japan and can therefore be found around temples there. The species is millions of years old and the oldest living specimen in Japan has even celebrated its thousandth (!) Birthday.

A rich history is under threat

Because the tree has been used for various cultural applications for thousands of years, the species has declined. On the IUCN Red List, the Japanese nut tree has been given the status of 'endangered'. This decline is really man-made, even though the species has a rich, long history. Fossils of the tree have been found from as far as 250 million years ago. The species, as we know it now, was therefore already there in the time of the dinosaurs! The Japanese nut tree is therefore seen as the 'missing link' between deciduous and coniferous trees.

The fruits of this tree are edible. In traditional Chinese medicine, various tree parts are believed to have a medicinal effect, for example for problems with digestion or blood circulation.

The Japanese nut tree can reach an age of several hundred years. In Europe these trees reach a height of 15 to 20 meters, but in Japan and China they reach heights of up to 40 meters. Truly a forest giant!
