Common pipistrelle

The common pipistrelle is the most common bat species in the Netherlands. Also in Vogelpark Avifauna you come across them a lot, especially in the evening. There are nesting locations in various places and the Avifauna offices are also equipped with bat boxes. These are all occupied by common pipistrelle bats!

Close to each other

This bat resides in colonies that are hidden in buildings, cavity walls, behind paneling or under roof tiles. In Eastern Europe they also live in caves and trees. They usually hunt within a radius of 2 to 5 km around their nest. In the Netherlands they don't really hibernate. Due to the moderate winters, they are regularly awake and then they go hunting. When it freezes, they seek out heated houses, where they hang out together, close together to keep warm.

These bats weigh between 6 and 15,5 grams and have a wingspan of 18 to 24 cm. The fur is brown and can vary on the back from orange-brown to dark brown.
