OUR NATURE

Chopped aurelia

The chopped aurelia is a butterfly that is common in Europe, North Africa and Asia. This butterfly can be seen throughout the Netherlands from March to October. The butterfly used to be called the '(white) c-butterfly' because of the white C on the underside of its hindwing.

A star in camouflage

The butterfly likes to live in moist and sunny places. Many nectar plants can be found here for food. Both the caterpillar and the butterfly are good at camouflage. The caterpillars resemble bird droppings. An adult butterfly, with its wings closed, resembles a fallen leaf. At the top of the wings not only its orange color with black spots is striking, but also the dark brown, serrated wing edges.

The eggs are laid on the leaf margin of the host plant. These host plants are mainly stinging nettle, hops, willow and hazel. When the caterpillar crawls out of the egg, it can immediately eat the plant. That is also why our landscaping team leaves these plants - which are seen by many as weeds - in some places.
