OUR NATURE

Brown-red darter

The brown-red darter is found in a large part of Europe and is therefore a very common species in the Netherlands. When this dragonfly species is completely out of color, it will have a red abdomen. The species partly owes its name to this.

Recognizable colours

The brown-red darter has black legs with yellow stripes. The male has a long and slender body without a club at the end. There are a few black spots on the abdomen. Females have a yellow abdomen that later changes to red or reddish brown. The abdomen has black stripes on the side.

Before the adult dragonfly dies, she deposits her egg in the water. The larva hibernates in it, which then hatches from the egg in the spring. The larvae have large eyes and a short, broad head. They live on the bottom of shallow water between aquatic plants. When the larva molts, the shells they leave behind have different colours.

DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN RECOGNIZE THE BROWN-RED DAIRY DRAGONFLY BY ITS MUSTACHE?

This strain has a look-a-like: the brick red darter. They can be distinguished from each other with minimal differences. A very sharp close-up of the head can help. If they have a black moustache, then it is the brown-red darter, but if a black ring beard is visible, then it is a brick-red darter.
