OUR NATURE

Scots pine

The Scots pine is a real native species, which originally also occurs in the Netherlands. Yet in the Netherlands hardly any Scots pines grow in their original place anymore, because they have disappeared there due to the peat excavations. Most have therefore been planted elsewhere. This species can live up to 700 years, but is usually cut down earlier.

Good resistance to drought

The Scots pine is a fast-growing tree that is popular for wood production. Another product that the tree supplies is resin, from which turpentine is made. Given these uses, Scots pines are usually felled when they are 80 to 120 years old. That may seem old, but they are still relatively young trees.

The Scots pine can survive in locations where water is scarce, or which experience long periods of drought. The tree loses less water from the needles than would be the case with leaves. In addition, the tree has a so-called 'tap root'; a long root that goes deep into the ground and can thus extract water from great depths.

A pine can be recognized by the round needles, which grow in sets of two. For example, a spruce has some needles, which are either flat or angular. A handy mnemonic for telling pines and spruces apart:
Den = duo (double needle)

Spruce = single (single needle)
