Pike

The pike is a real predatory fish that can be found in many Dutch waters. Here it mainly feeds on smaller fish species. You will also often encounter the pike in the ditches and ponds of Avifauna. Sometimes you can see them sunbathing under the surface of the water.

A real cannibal

The pike is found in large parts of Europe, Asia and North America. It lives in fresh and brackish water and can be found in almost all inland waters. In the spring, the pike mates. The eggs (a small pike can easily produce 15.000) are then deposited in shallow water, after which the female leaves the area. The male stays behind for a while, but does not protect the eggs. In fact, pike are also cannibalistic. They will simply eat smaller congeners (and therefore possibly their own young) if the opportunity arises.

The pike is a predatory fish. It preys on other fish, amphibians, crustaceans, rodents and even young birds. This is important, because this is how they keep the populations of herbivorous fish in balance. If these fish are common, the hiding places for young pike will decrease.

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE PIKE EATS ITS PREY LIKE A SNAKE?

The pike is the largest predatory fish found in Avifauna. When a pike eats prey, it first eats its head. Just like a snake! Pikes mainly hunt by sight. Older animals can still hunt in murky water with few plants, but young animals cannot hide here, waiting for their prey.
