Victoria crown pigeon

What a graceful appearance this bird is! The Victoria Crowned Pigeon has an erect fan of blue feathers with white tips that it wears like a crown. The nickname of this pigeon is therefore 'fan pigeon', but with its official name this bird is named after the British Queen Victoria. She reigned when this species was discovered in 1844.

Statement

Speaking his parents!

This remarkably large, blue pigeon has bright red eyes and legs. Young crown pigeons already closely resemble the parents. They are still a lot smaller and their crest still has to grow considerably, but they already have blue plumage. In our zoo you can admire the Victoria crown pigeons in the Tropenhal and in the Asia aviaries. It is one of the many types of pigeons in our collection.

The Victoria Crowned Pigeon is found on the northern part of the island of New Guinea and on some surrounding islands. They mainly inhabit the tropical forests there, but are also observed in swamp areas and open plains. At the end of the day they always go back to the woods. This pigeon lives mainly on the ground, but does fly to flee, to breed or to sleep.

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE VICTORIA CROWN PIGEON IS THE LARGEST PIGEON IN THE WORLD?

The pigeon is only no less than 75 cm long and weighs up to 3,5 kilogram. That makes it the largest pigeon species in the world. And do you know what is also special? The Victoria Crowned Pigeon is close relative on the dodo, the legendary bird that has sadly become extinct.
