OUR ANIMALS

Soldierara

The soldier's macaw gets its name from the color of its feathers, which matches the green of military uniforms. These large parrots are found in a narrow strip of dry and tropical forests stretching from Mexico to Central and South America. They are here in the canopy of tall trees and breed in tree cavities.

Handy toes

A striking feature in parrots is that they have two toes pointing forward and two toes pointing backward. They can walk well over branches with it, it gives good grip, but above all they can hold food well with it, which they then process with their beak. With that strong beak, the soldier macaw can open even the strongest nuts.

To digest seeds, nuts and (unripe) fruits, the birds also eat clay, which they gnaw away at clay walls along rivers. With this they neutralize toxins from food and they absorb essential minerals. Soldier macaws can pair for life, in relationships that can last 50 to 60 years. Unfortunately, these birds are becoming less and less common in nature. This is due to the degradation of their habitat and the trade in these birds. In our animal park you will not only encounter this macaw, but also the green-winged macaw and blue-yellow macaw, for example during the bird demonstration!
