OUR ANIMALS

Red vari

Red ruffed lemurs live in the treetops of the coastal rainforests of northeastern Madagascar. In the morning they like to lie in the sun to gain energy for the day. Because of the heat, they take it easy in the afternoon, only to become active again at dusk. Yet they are also well prepared for a tropical shower, because their red-brown coat is almost completely waterproof.

Comb with teeth

In nature, red lemurs live in groups of 5 to 18 animals. In Avifauna they live in the Madagascar area, along with the ring-tailed lemurs, red-bellied lemurs, black crowned cranes and various species of guinea fowl. What is special about the Madagascar area is that you walk between the animals here and can view the animals up close.

The teeth in the lower jaw of a red ruff are shaped like a comb. This allows them to maintain each other's coat. Red ruffed lemurs have special scent glands on their chests with which they leave scent marks on branches and leaves. This way their peers know where they have been and what their territory is.

DID YOU KNOW THAT ONLY MALE RED VARIS LIVE IN AVIFAUNA?

Unlike the ring-tailed lemur, the number goes red varis still backward in the wild. The species is under great pressure. That is why Avifauna participates in the EAZA Ex situ Program (EEP) for this endangered species. Within this management program, an active exchange with other European zoos takes place to maintain genetically healthy populations. In our bird park the group consists exclusively of male red varis. Avifauna makes these animals available for the EEP, and also takes in males that cannot be accommodated elsewhere.
