European eagle owl

The European eagle owl is not only found in Europe, including Scandinavia, but also in the Middle East and the Far East. They live in old forests and breed on rock walls. The males weigh up to 3 kg and the female can even reach 4,5 kg. This makes the eagle owl the largest owl species in Europe and perhaps even in the world. There is still some discussion about this, but that does not alter the fact that this bird is an impressive appearance.

At night the owl comes to life

These large owls have mostly brown plumage, striking orange eyes and black ear tufts. The color of the feathers varies depending on the habitat. For example, the eagle owls in Russia, which live mainly in the snow, have rather pale plumage, just like the animals in desert areas. Then they are less noticeable!

The birds have a large territory of 80 m2, which the male guards closely. The eagle owl is a real twilight hunter. It is most active at sunset, but it is also a very successful hunter at night. Other owl species have this rhythm too, because at night our park is regularly visited by long-eared owls that live in the wild.
