Double Hornbill

This special bird owes its name to the striking horn-like growth on its large yellow beak. This beak allows it to call loudly and uses it to regulate its temperature. With a wingspan of 150 cm, the double hornbill is the largest hornbill in existence. Eight other species also live in our park!

Statement

What a beautiful couple!

The double hornbill is found in several Asian countries and on several Indonesian islands. They live there in tropical forests, preferably in tall old trees from 600 meters to even 2000 meters high!

There they breed in tree cavities, and during the breeding period the female is completely dependent on the male for her food. She is therefore very selective in her choice of mate, because hornbills are monogamous. This means that they also stay together outside the breeding season. Do you want to know if it is a male or a female? Then take a good look at their eyes. Those of the male are reddish brown and those of the female are light colored. The male is also larger and has a helmet with a black tip.
