OUR ANIMALS

Red panda

The name 'panda' means 'bamboo eater'. It is therefore well chosen, because although this animal has the teeth of a carnivore, it mainly eats bamboo (95%), grasses, fruits and sometimes eggs and young birds. Contrary to what the name suggests, the red panda is not related to the giant panda. He belongs to the cats.

Statement

Well protected against the cold

Into the pandas Vogelpark Avifauna belong to the species found in the Himalayan Mountains. They live there in mixed forests of deciduous and coniferous trees, at an altitude of 2200 to 4800 meters! The legs of the red panda are hairy and have sharp nails. This allows the red panda to climb well and its feet are protected against the cold. On the sides of the front legs is a bunion that the animals use as a kind of thumb to grab bamboo.

In Avifauna, the red pandas can be found in the Oriental garden. The red panda female is called Mai and she has already raised two cubs in Avifauna. In 2022 she is paired with a new man, Luigi, in the hope of a new offspring.

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE RED PANDA CAN SLEEP UP TO 17 HOURS A DAY?

It can be quite a challenge to get the Red panda to spot in our zoo. They are mainly active early in the morning, or around dusk. They sleep a lot around that, up to 17 hours a day. They like to do this high in a tree of cavity. By being active at these times, they avoid the heat of the day. With their thick fur, red pandas are resistant to snow and cold, but less well to the heat.
