Dalmatian pelican

Until the 15th century, these large birds were still common on Dutch lakes and rivers. Within Europe, the species has since declined sharply. That is why various nature conservation organizations and zoos have united to bring the Dalmatian pelican back to Western Europe, with the Netherlands as a base. Within this ambitious project, Avifauna participates in the breeding program for this species.

Wild hair

To get and stay in the air, such a large bird of course also needs large wings. The Dalmatian pelican has a wingspan of no less than 3,5 meters! That is almost a record, because only the giant albatross beats it, with wings that are about 20 centimeters longer. The name of the Dalmatian pelican is not a bad choice, by the way, with the 'wild hairs' they have!

In the wild, the Dalmatian pelican has a large range, stretching from southeastern Europe as far as China. This species is found in both fresh and salt water areas, ranging from lakes and rivers, to lagoons and coastal areas. In our animal park you will find the Dalmatian pelicans at the large pond, at the back of the bird park. It is not the only pelican species in Avifauna, by the way. Brown pelicans can also be seen during the bird demonstrations, which impress with their special thrust dives!
