This tree species is mainly used for wood, because the chestnuts are poisonous to humans. On the other hand, the chestnuts are used in medicines for horses to combat respiratory infections. A real horse remedy, hence the name! In the Middle Ages, carrying chestnuts was recommended as a remedy for rheumatism, but that knowledge has been superseded by modern medical science. What is becoming 'in' again is to make a detergent from chestnuts. A nice ecological alternative to synthetic detergents!
Around August-September, the leaves of this chestnut tree show brown spots. This is not yet a preparation for the leaf loss in autumn, but the result of a minuscule moth, the 'horse chestnut leaf miner'. The caterpillars of this species feed on leaf pulp. They are so small that they can live in the leaf and cause damage there. Eventually the leaf will die. If you look closely at the leaves, or at the trunk, you may be able to see these beautiful butterflies. It is a good search, because they are only 5 millimeters in size.

The abundance of greenery not only contributes to the experience of visitors, but also makes our zoo an essential part of the recreational landscape of South Holland. We therefore give high priority to preserving and strengthening the green structure. Did you know, for example, that we work with very detailed planting plans? We use every square meter of the park to give the different areas a varied and natural appearance.
