OUR ANIMALS

Emperor tamarin

The emperor tamarin is one of the smallest monkey species in the world. They are not much bigger than a squirrel. They are social animals that live in families, keeping in touch with each other through sounds and smells. Emperor tamarins live in trees in the Amazon, Bolivia, Brazil and Peru. In Avifauna we simulated that humid environment on Nuboso, or 'cloud forest'.

Statement

That's mustache!

The emperor tamarin has a brown-gray coat and an orange-brown tail of about 40 centimeters. What immediately catches the eye in this species is the large moustache. It also owes its name to the Emperor Tamarin, since its mustache is said to resemble the mustache of the German Emperor Wilhelm II. It says nothing about their masculinity, because females have just as long mustaches as males.

In our zoo, the emperor tamarins live on Nuboso, along with other Amazon inhabitants such as the white-faced saki, red titi and red howler monkey. In nature they live in family groups, of which only the dominant female reproduces. The entire group then helps to protect and raise the boy.

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE EMPEROR TAMARIN CAN EAT A WHOLE FROG WHEN IT IS NOT MUCH BIGGER THAN A SQUIRREL?

Emperor tamarins are true omnivores. These omnivores eat fruit, tree sap, flowers, insects and other invertebrates, but also vertebrates, such as small reptiles and frogs. They largely collect this food themselves on the monkey island of Nuboso. The rich vegetation attracts many insects, but they also strip the bark from some trees and then lick up the released tree juices.
