STORK storks

In the 1969s, the stork was virtually extinct in the Netherlands. This was partly due to the use of heavy pesticides on the pastures. As a result, the stork could no longer find food and the species disappeared. Since XNUMX, many volunteers, zoos and Vogelbescherming Nederland have been working hard for the stork. And that has been very successful.

Follow development

Thanks to this effort, the number of breeding pairs has increased to over 1000 in recent years and the breeding areas are still expanding. It is important to monitor the development and distribution of the population in order to monitor the survival rate for the future.

Joined forces

To ensure that all this runs smoothly, STORK was established in 2009: Stichting Ooievaars Research en Knowhow. This organization works closely with Vogelbescherming Nederland, Sovon, the Vogeltrekstation, stork stations and many nesting pole owners. In this way, forces are combined to protect the stork properly.

Our contribution

Also Vogelpark Avifauna works closely with STORK. For example, we place and manage various breeding poles in the bird park, which has currently led to 8-10 nests per year. We also help ring young storks for scientific research. Some storks that as young in Vogelpark Avifauna have been ringed, have already been spotted in Spain and Portugal. Other storks don't seem to be leaving the Netherlands. This type of information provides many new insights into, for example, the migratory behavior of the stork.
