San Martin Titi's

The San Martín titi monkey is related to the red titi and is only found in the tropical forests of Peru. Unfortunately, this species is threatened with extinction, as its habitat is diminishing due to deforestation for agriculture and growing cities, for example. That is why Proyecto Mono Tocón was founded. This organization is committed to preserving biodiversity in Peru, with a focus on the San Martín titi.

Shredded habitat

As a result of deforestation, the remaining habitat of the San Martín titi has become fragmented. For example, contact between different populations has become impossible, making the species even more vulnerable. In 2012, the San Martín titi was included on the list of the world's 25 most endangered primates. So time for change.

Local involvement

Proyecto Mono Tocón does a lot of research into the animals in order to take effective protection measures. The organization has also set up an educational program for the local population and local authorities. This teaches them to deal sustainably with natural resources. The ultimate goal is for the local communities to increasingly work together to give the forests in the region a protected status.

Support from European zoos

With both international and local support, various initiatives have now been set up to protect the habitat of the San Martín titi. Good developments, but to increase the chances of survival of the San Martín titi, more protected areas are needed. That is why Proyecto Mono Tocón receives support from several European zoos, including Vogelpark Avifauna, to continue this great work.
