We recently welcomed two impressive marabou storks and two charming bat-eared foxes to our valley.
The marabous are back
After seven years, these stately birds can once again be admired at Avifauna. Marabou storks belong to the stork family and are true scavengers. Reaching lengths of up to 1,5 meters and with their imposing appearance, they are an impressive addition to the valley, where they feel at home among their vulture friends.
Did you know that marabous have a bald head to stay hygienic and that they poop and pee on their paws to cool off?
Meet the bat-eared fox
New and unique in Umvikeli: the bat-eared fox! These playful predators are notable for their enormous ears, up to 13 cm long. They use them not only to cool off but also to hear insects moving underground.
Together with the vultures, secretary birds, glossy starlings and the colorful hoopoe, the bat-eared foxes provide even more variety and liveliness in the valley.
Did you know that bat-eared foxes use their large ears to locate insects underground?
You'll find them all in Vulture Valley Umvikeli – the place where Africa comes to life!
