In 2023, welcomed Vogelpark Avifauna A special pair of Steller's sea eagles, originating from a confiscation in Belgium. This year they have raised a young one for the first time – a milestone! The young animal is now preparing for a journey to Sosto Zoo in Hungary.
Collaboration for species conservation
The Steller's sea eagle is part of the EEP (EAZA ex-situ Programme), a European program dedicated to the conservation of endangered species. Thirty zoos collaborate to keep the species genetically healthy. This involves exchanging birds, carefully forming pairs, and ensuring optimal living conditions. A colleague from Sosto Zoo coordinates this program.
Why this kid is so important
Our pair plays a crucial role in the EEP. Because these birds originate from a confiscation, they represent a unique bloodline rarely seen in the program. The young that hatched this year is therefore a valuable addition. At Sosto Zoo, it will grow up together with other young sea eagles in a spacious aviary, where it can choose its own mate. Only after four or five years—when they are adults—will they move together to another zoo to raise their own offspring.
Preparing for the trip
Before the young sea eagle can leave, all the paperwork must be in order. The species is listed on Appendix A of CITES, which means a special "passport" is required. In addition, the bird's health is thoroughly checked: fecal analysis, a veterinary check, and a final inspection by an NVWA doctor, who also signs the transport papers. This ensures the bird travels safely and healthily to its new home.
